Modi has said a lot of times in his speeches that Bharat should abandon traces of the colonial mindset and started from name of country that is India name to bharat before G20 summit.

Sources claim that later this month, during the five-day extraordinary session of parliament that begins on September 18, the government may propose a resolution to change the nation’s name from India to Bharat. The rumors have only grown since the government hasn’t released an agenda for the special session.

2020 saw the dismissal of a PIL calling for a name change by Chief Justice of India S. A. Bobde. The Constitution uses both the designations “Bharat” and “India. The Constitution already refers to India as “Bharat,” Justice Bobde had stated, declining to entertain the argument.
Inscriptions
Inscriptions in HathiGumpha at Udayagiri Hills near Bhubaneswar, Odisha, are 17-line inscriptions inscribed by King Kharabela during the 2nd century BCE in a restrained area of northern India, namely part of the Ganges and west of Magadha in Sanskrit epics. So name of country was Bharat instead of India which shows by these inscriptions.

1.From Rigveda
There are some mentions in Rigveda about Bharatas are one of the tribes of Aryavart. Some Puranic passages refers to the same as Bharat people.
2. In Vayu Purana
Vayu purana 45 chapter , shloka 86 says that” he who conquers the whole Bharatvarsh is celebrated as Samrata.
3. Vishnu Purana
Vishnu Purana(2,1,31)
Rushabho Marudebyascha Rushabhat Bharat bhabet,
Bharatad bharatvarsam, bharatat sumatistvabhuti
Explanations:-
Rishabha was born to marudevi, Bharat was born to Rishabh,
Bharatvarsh arose from Bharat and sumati arose from Bharat.
Vishnu Purana(2,1,32)
Tataschva bharatam varsametallokesugiyate
Bharataya yatah pitra dattam pratistita vanam
Explanations:-
“Since the father gave his son Bharat the throne and he himself withdrew to the forest for ascetic rituals, the nation has been referred to as “Bharatvarsam.”
Vishnu Purana
Uttaram yatsomudrasya himadraschaiva Dakhinam
varshan tad bharatam nama bharati yatra santatih.
The country that lies north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains is called Bharata.
4.Srimad Bhagwat(Canto 5 chapter 4)
“He(Rishabha) had one hundred sons who were just like him. This land is referred to by the locals as Bharatavarsha since Bharata had the best advantages.”
Other mentions
Puranas claim that this nation is known as Bharatvarsh in honor of Bharat, a khatriya born during the Surya Dynasty and the son of Rishabh. The Bharatvarsh term is used throughout the Vishnu Purana, Vayu Purana, Linga Purana, Brahmanda Purana, Agni Purana, Skanda Purana, and Markandeya Purana.
